While I don't disagree with this sentence completely I would say sometimes the order is reversed. The spread of conspiracy theories and disinformation is increased as a consequence of an environment in which public trust had already been dismantled and betrayed.
It's not only the cause of more distrust but a side-affect of a lack of it in the first place.
