“Apparently, personal grievances are not a legitimate budget category.”

America can relax. The Trump administration’s proposed $1.8 billion “anti-weaponization fund” has finally been taken behind the Justice Department and quietly put out of our misery.

The fund was supposed to compensate Trump supporters and political allies who claimed they had been unfairly prosecuted. Potential recipients reportedly included January 6 defendants, because this administration’s idea of supporting law enforcement apparently involves pardoning rioters and then exploring ways to send them taxpayer-funded apology checks.

Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche formally killed the plan after Republican Senators John Cornyn and Thom Tillis threatened to block his confirmation as attorney general.

Yes, two Republican senators briefly discovered oversight.

Nobody panic. It appears to have passed.

Blanche insisted the fund was going nowhere, but the senators demanded that he put it in writing. Sensible move. A verbal promise from the Trump administration usually has the shelf life of warm mayonnaise. At least a written order gives Congress something tangible to wave around when the plan mysteriously returns next Tuesday under a different name.

According to the Justice Department, nobody was appointed to administer the fund, no money was transferred, no claims process was created, and nobody received a payment.

By Trump administration standards, that makes it one of their most efficient programs.

It accomplished nothing, wasted no money, helped no wealthy loyalists, and collapsed before anyone could name a ballroom after it.

The agreement also reportedly included broad protections involving tax audits of Trump and his family. Because when average Americans deal with the IRS, they receive stern letters, payment deadlines, and a sudden interest in prayer. When the Trump family deals with the IRS, someone apparently tries to include the presidential equivalent of a family protection plan.

Blanche, of course, previously served as Trump’s criminal defense attorney. He is now seeking confirmation as the nation’s top law enforcement officer, which feels a little like hiring your personal casino lawyer to supervise the Gaming Commission. Technically, he has relevant experience. It is simply relevant in a deeply unsettling direction.

The compensation fund is dead, at least for the moment. Trump continues to portray January 6 defendants as persecuted patriots who deserve sympathy, pardons, and possibly reimbursement.

Meanwhile, the officers attacked at the Capitol are still waiting for the Republican Party to remember that “back the blue” was supposed to include them.

Apparently, their checks got lost in the mail.

It’s always the mysterious ‘they’.

RFK Jr. appeared on State of the Union ready to perform his favorite public-health trick: start with a legitimate reason to distrust government, stir in a few old conspiracy theories, and announce that the entire medical establishment is hiding something.

Dana Bash asked him about vaccines. Kennedy reacted as though she had personally invented COVID, patented measles, and hidden the cure behind the vending machine at CNN.

“You were scaring people,” he snapped, accusing the network of spreading propaganda.

That is quite a complaint from a man who has spent years suggesting that nearly every syringe contains a corporate plot, a government cover-up, or something mysterious that only he has been brave enough to notice.

Kennedy’s argument is simple. Public-health officials made mistakes, so every medical conclusion is now suspect. Experts sometimes communicated badly, so apparently your cousin’s Facebook page deserves equal time with decades of research.

Yes, the COVID vaccines were imperfect. They did not prevent every infection or stop every transmission. They did reduce severe illness, hospitalization, and death. Calling them failures because they were not magical force fields is like calling seat belts useless because ambulances still exist.

Then there is the vaccine-autism claim, which Kennedy keeps dragging back into public debate like a lawn decoration that should have been thrown away twenty years ago. Scientists have studied it repeatedly. The answer is still no. Kennedy’s response is always to demand another study, preferably one that continues until it finally agrees with him.

Bash mostly held her ground, although Kennedy managed to turn parts of the interview into his preferred format: a heated argument about how unfairly everyone treats RFK Jr.

That may be the most troubling part. This was not some crank holding court at Thanksgiving dinner. This was the secretary of Health and Human Services treating established medicine like an enemy campaign.

Kennedy says he wants to restore trust in public health. His plan appears to be setting fire to the laboratory, blaming CNN for the smoke, and asking why everyone is panicking.

The pool was supposed to reflect Lincoln. Instead, it reflected the administration.

The Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool has finally done what it was designed to do: reflect the government standing over it.

The Trump administration spent roughly $14.7 million renovating the pool before America’s 250th birthday. The job was hurried. The new blue coating began peeling. Trump blamed vandals, because in his Washington, defective workmanship is apparently less believable than a vast conspiracy against decorative sealant.

Then federal prosecutors found their culprit: David Hearn, a 67-year-old, three-time Olympic canoeist who stopped during a bike ride and touched a loose piece of coating. He said it was already peeling and that he let go when a park worker told him to. Prosecutors nevertheless charged him with felony property destruction.

Jeanine Pirro’s office treated the loose coating as though Hearn had taken a chisel to Lincoln himself. The administration had its vandal, its prosecution, and its explanation for why a multimillion-dollar renovation was coming apart.

Unfortunately, the pool kept reflecting.

The Justice Department has now moved to dismiss the case after learning that the coating failure resulted from flawed installation during a rushed project. In other words, the suspect was not the cyclist. It was the contractor.

That sequence captures Trump-era governing with remarkable efficiency. Order something flashy. Demand it quickly. Ignore the obvious problems. Blame an enemy. Find someone to punish. Discover the facts only after the courtroom paperwork is filed.

The funniest detail is that this happened at the Reflecting Pool, a monument built around the concept of seeing what is actually there. Trump saw sabotage. Pirro saw a felony. Contractors saw an invoice. Everyone else saw paint falling off.

America paid nearly $15 million for the renovation, but the clearest result came free of charge: a perfect reflection of an administration more interested in assigning blame than accepting responsibility.

The market is stable. Seniors, not so much.

Dr. Mehmet Oz says the administration is “stabilizing the market” by pulling back a Medicare Part D subsidy that helped prevent premiums from rising too sharply.

That is one way to describe it. Another would be: stop helping seniors, then praise the market for surviving.

Oz calls the subsidy a “bailout,” a word normally saved for assistance that politicians want the public to resent. When government money protects an insurance company or cushions a major industry, we hear about investment, partnership, and economic growth. When it helps an older person afford coverage, suddenly Washington has discovered the dangers of dependency.

Higher premiums may be coming, but the market will be stable. This is comforting news for the market, which does not have arthritis, diabetes, heart disease, or a fixed income. The market has never stood at a pharmacy counter doing mental arithmetic while a line forms behind it.

The people affected by these decisions do that every day.

Still, the language remains soothing. Nobody is losing help. A temporary program is simply ending. Nobody is being pushed toward more expensive or restrictive choices. Consumers are being given an opportunity to explore the full range of their financial desperation.

Oz seems especially qualified to deliver this message. He spent years on television presenting health advice with perfect confidence and a studio audience ready to applaud. Now the remedy is austerity, packaged with the same reassuring smile. The prescription is simple: reduce the assistance, rename the result, and tell the patient the system is healthier.

Under the Oz method, the patient is not struggling. The patient is participating in market adjustment. If the patient cannot afford the adjustment, that is regrettable, but perhaps the patient should have planned more carefully before becoming old.

Private insurers, meanwhile, are unlikely to suffer serious side effects. They may experience increased enrollment, stronger revenues, and an uncontrollable urge to thank taxpayers for respecting the free market.

The administration will insist this is not a cut. “Cut” sounds harsh. This is merely government stepping aside so seniors can enjoy a more direct relationship with rising costs.

Medicare was created because healthcare cannot be treated like an ordinary consumer purchase. Sick people cannot simply wait for a sale. Older people cannot comparison-shop their way out of chronic illness. A prescription is not a luxury item, no matter how creatively Washington describes it.

So yes, Dr. Oz may succeed in stabilizing the market. The only unstable part will be the lives of the people expected to pay more.

That is not healthcare reform. It is cost shifting dressed in a white coat.

Donald Trump’s approval ratings are sinking. Americans are angry about higher prices, expensive gasoline, a stumbling economy, and his confused, costly war with Iran.

Clearly, this was the perfect time to investigate Dr. Anthony Fauci again.

Welcome to Trump’s Red Meat Distraction Action, the emergency Republican procedure used whenever voters begin noticing that the president is failing. Toss Fauci onto the grill, summon Rand Paul, and hope the base forgets what it paid for groceries.

Fauci is 85 years old. He advised seven presidents, led the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases for nearly four decades, helped fight the AIDS epidemic, and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from George W. Bush.

Naturally, MAGA considers him more dangerous than Vladimir Putin.

Senator Rand Paul subpoenaed Fauci so Republicans could perform their favorite COVID ceremony: shouting accusations, ignoring answers, and pretending a respected infectious disease specialist created a worldwide pandemic solely to inconvenience Donald Trump.

Fauci invoked the Fifth Amendment repeatedly because Paul’s hearing had all the fairness and intellectual integrity of a parking lot interrogation conducted by men selling stolen televisions.

Then Senator Bernie Moreno demanded, “Who the f*ck do you think you were?”

Well, senator, he was the medical expert standing beside Trump while Trump discussed injecting disinfectant and shining powerful lights inside the human body.

Fauci said nothing.

Smart man.

The hearing was never really about public health, accountability, or the origins of COVID. It was about feeding Trump’s supporters another familiar villain while the administration’s actual failures pile up outside the hearing room.

For a few precious hours, MAGA could stop thinking about inflation, war, casualties, gas prices, and Trump’s miserable polling.

The dangerous old man was back.

No, not Trump.

The other one.

“World wars begin when leaders mistake escalation for control.”

Some mornings the news is bad. Other mornings it feels as though the world is standing in a room full of gasoline while political leaders compete to strike the loudest match.

Today feels like the second kind.

The United States has launched a major wave of attacks on Iran, striking Revolutionary Guard command centers, missile sites, drone facilities, and coastal defenses. The strikes followed an Iranian missile attack aimed at American military bases in the Middle East, including Jordan. The conflict has spread through Iraq, Kuwait, and the Strait of Hormuz.

This is no longer a contained confrontation, assuming it ever was. It is a widening war with more countries, more weapons, more suffering, and more chances for one terrible mistake.

As if that were not enough, a Russian cruise missile crossed into Poland during an attack on Ukraine and crashed near the Ukrainian border. Poland is not Ukraine. Poland is a member of NATO. Polish officials said there was no indication that Poland was deliberately targeted, but intention is only part of the danger. Missiles do not need malicious intent to kill people or trigger military responses.

This is how world wars become possible.

They do not always begin with a formal declaration delivered by a solemn president behind a polished desk. Sometimes they begin through a chain of actions that every government describes as necessary, defensive, proportionate, or unavoidable. One country retaliates. Another restores deterrence. Another protects its allies. Another refuses to appear weak. Each attack is presented as the action that will end the escalation, right before the next attack begins.

The people ordering these strikes speak in the bloodless language of targets, assets, capabilities, and strategic objectives. Civilians experience the translation. It means shattered homes, terrified children, burned hospitals, interrupted food supplies, lost electricity, and bodies pulled from rubble.

We should be suspicious whenever war is sold as a clean instrument that can be carefully calibrated by people who have repeatedly failed to predict its consequences or tell the truth about its costs.

The most frightening part is not that every leader involved woke up this morning intending to start World War III. The greater danger is that too many powerful people believe they can keep escalating without losing control. History is crowded with leaders who assumed the other side would back down. It is also crowded with graves dug after they were proven wrong.

There is a political sickness at work here too. War gives failing leaders an opportunity to wrap themselves in the flag, silence criticism, redirect public anger, and disguise recklessness as courage. Bombing becomes leadership. Diplomacy becomes weakness. Anyone asking how the killing ends is accused of helping the enemy.

That is not strength. It is cowardice with military backing.

Real strength would mean admitting that no missile can create a stable Middle East, no bombing campaign can manufacture democracy, and no nuclear power can indefinitely provoke another nuclear alliance without risking catastrophe. Real leadership would mean negotiations, ceasefires, humanitarian corridors, and security that does not depend on terrorizing civilians.

The American public has a responsibility. We cannot let television graphics, patriotic music, and Pentagon vocabulary numb us into treating war like entertainment. We should demand evidence for official claims. We should oppose collective punishment. We should insist that Congress perform its constitutional duty instead of handing decisions of war and peace to Donald Trump or any other president.

Opposing escalation does not mean supporting Iran, Russia, or any other authoritarian government. That is a childish argument used to shut down serious debate. We can condemn dictators, invasions, terrorism, and repression while also opposing policies that multiply death and make a wider war more likely.

Moral seriousness requires it.

World War III has not officially begun. That distinction matters. Panic is not analysis, and fear should never become another weapon used to manipulate the public.

But the smell is real.

It is the smell of burning infrastructure, collapsing diplomacy, wounded national pride, alliance obligations, reckless leaders, and weapons moving faster than human judgment. It is the smell of governments preparing us to accept what should never become normal.

The answer is not despair. The answer is pressure.

Call this what it is. Demand de-escalation. Defend diplomacy before the people who profit from war convince us that peace was never an option.

Because once the room catches fire, it will not matter who struck the first match.

The GOP can set the kitchen on fire, blame the smoke alarm, and sell the ashes as freedom.

Donald Trump’s approval rating has fallen to 34 percent, which is less a political number than a distress signal from arithmetic. At this point, his poll numbers have entered witness protection. They have changed their names, left Florida, and asked not to be contacted by anyone wearing a red hat.

Naturally, Trump insists everything is going beautifully. The war with Iran is supposedly a tremendous success, except for the deaths, the billions of dollars, the rising gasoline prices, the missing strategy, and the inconvenient fact that much of the country does not want it. A separate poll found that 65 percent of Americans say the war is not worth paying more at the pump. Trump’s response seems to be, “Have they tried inheriting money?”

This is the great MAGA bargain. Americans were promised cheaper groceries, fewer foreign wars, lower taxes, better health care, energy independence, and an economy so magnificent that every toaster would open a retirement account. Instead, they got $4 gasoline, another Middle East disaster, and a president explaining sacrifice from a gold-plated room where the ketchup probably has its own Secret Service detail.

The administration will tell us the higher prices are temporary, patriotic, necessary, misunderstood, caused by Biden, caused by Iran, caused by the Federal Reserve, or caused by anyone else who wandered too close to a microphone. Responsibility in Trump World is like a hotel Bible. Everyone knows it is in the room, but nobody opens it.

Republicans now approach the midterms with Trump strapped to their backs like an angry casino chandelier. Every candidate must pretend the economy is roaring while voters stand in grocery aisles quietly deciding whether eggs now require financing. They must praise the war, defend the tariffs, salute the deficit, and explain why “America First” currently means Americans pay first.

The party’s campaign strategy will probably rely on the usual combination of fear, flags, and carefully selected enemies. When gasoline rises, blame environmentalists. When groceries cost more, blame workers. When the deficit explodes, blame poor people for buying cereal. When the war expands, call it peace through strength and hope nobody asks for a map.

Trump says he does not care about the midterms. Nothing calms nervous Republican lawmakers quite like hearing the pilot announce he has lost interest in the landing. They are still expected to defend every late-night threat, every incoherent speech, and every policy reversal, while Trump keeps the right to call them weak, disloyal, or insufficiently photogenic.

Democrats, meanwhile, have been handed a deeply unpopular president, an unpopular war, higher prices, nervous Republicans, and an electorate showing obvious signs of exhaustion. Naturally, they are studying the situation carefully and forming a committee to determine whether winning might appear too aggressive.

This is the Democratic Party’s special talent. Republicans can set the kitchen on fire, blame the smoke alarm, and sell the ashes as freedom. Democrats will respond with a twelve-point plan, three competing slogans, and a fundraising email titled “We Need Your Input.” Somewhere, a consultant is being paid $300,000 to recommend the phrase “A Better Tomorrow, Together, Forward.”

Still, the polls suggest voters are tired, poorer, and increasingly unimpressed by the daily carnival of threats, boasts, and televised nonsense. Trump retains a loyal base, but loyalty has limits when rent is due, the gas tank is empty, and the president is asking families to treat hardship as applause.

November may become the moment when voters finally examine the receipt. They may discover that the strongman was mostly stage lighting, the economic miracle came with service charges, and the foreign policy genius was just another man shouting at the television.

“America First” loses some sparkle when America gets the bill.

Nothing says ‘peace summit’ like two men accused of war crimes deciding which country should be bombed next.

Donald Trump and Benjamin Netanyahu are meeting at the White House to discuss whether the United States should keep negotiating with Iran or return to Washington’s favorite diplomatic tradition, dropping extremely expensive machinery on people until they become more agreeable.

It is quite a gathering.

Netanyahu arrives under an International Criminal Court arrest warrant alleging war crimes and crimes against humanity. Trump arrives followed by his own growing cloud of war-crimes accusations and legal warnings, plus the usual confidence of a man who believes international law is something weaker countries are expected to obey.

The central question is whether Netanyahu can persuade Trump to abandon or narrow negotiations with Iran.

In ordinary English, Bibi has come to Washington to explain that talking is dangerous, bombing is responsible, and peace should only be attempted after enough bridges, power stations, military installations, and inconvenient neighborhoods have been turned into smoking evidence of regional stability.

Trump, meanwhile, says he wants diplomacy.

Watching Donald Trump discover diplomacy is like watching a raccoon discover a violin. You admire the curiosity, but you still expect him to smash it, steal something shiny, and blame Barack Obama.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has offered a less polite assessment. Mamdani called Netanyahu the “architect of a horrific genocide” in Gaza and said the Israeli prime minister is not welcome in New York City.

That is Mamdani’s accusation, not a judicial finding. But it does capture the surreal contrast between how Netanyahu is treated in New York and how he is received in Washington.

In New York, Mamdani says he should face accountability.

In Washington, Trump gives him a chair, a photo opportunity, and a chance to browse the Pentagon weapons catalog.

One city hears “war-crimes warrant” and starts talking about the law. The White House hears it and asks whether the guest prefers coffee or another aircraft carrier.

Netanyahu, naturally, accused Mamdani of fomenting hate. This is now a familiar political trick. Bombing civilians is described as security. Calling attention to civilian deaths is described as hatred. Demanding accountability becomes extremism, while proposing another military campaign is treated as the sober position held by serious adults.

Netanyahu knows how to work Trump. He will bring maps, intelligence folders, ominous photographs, and enough urgent warnings to make Iran appear capable of building a nuclear weapon before dessert.

His argument will be simple: diplomacy has failed because it has not yet produced the war he requested.

Trump may resist, not because he has become Gandhi in a red tie, but because wars are expensive, unpopular, difficult to control, and filled with generals who speak in complete paragraphs.

Trump prefers conflicts that can be announced online, finished before the evening news, and commemorated with a gold plaque, a ballroom, and perhaps a limited-edition victory cologne.

The moral authority in the room should be breathtaking.

Netanyahu, formally accused by the ICC, will argue that more bombing is necessary for security. Trump, who has faced legal warnings over threats and attacks involving civilian infrastructure, will decide whether further destruction is useful, politically convenient, or at least good television.

Perhaps Trump will choose negotiations.

Perhaps he will impose another deadline, because nothing says serious foreign policy like repeatedly giving the world two weeks to behave.

Perhaps Netanyahu will leave disappointed, forced to return home without a fresh American war tucked under his arm.

Or perhaps the two men will emerge smiling, praise their commitment to peace, and announce several exciting new ways to kill people until peace improves.

The cameras will flash. The flags will stand perfectly still. Mamdani will keep saying the quiet part out loud.

And the rest of us will once again be asked to pretend that two men standing beside a gasoline can are the best people available to discuss fire prevention.

When a president sees the Constitution as background décor, democracy becomes a photo op, executive power becomes personal property, and accountability gets cropped out entirely.

Donald Trump has apparently discovered the Constitution. Not read it, of course. That would require patience, concentration, and several consecutive paragraphs that do not mention Donald Trump. He has discovered it the way a raccoon discovers a locked trash can: as an irritating obstacle that can probably be defeated with enough clawing, hissing, and complete indifference to property law.

Congress controls taxes and tariffs? Fine. Declare an emergency. The Supreme Court strikes down the tariffs? Fine. Try another statute, another loophole, another side door, or one conveniently unlatched window. Trump’s governing philosophy is burglary with a presidential seal, while Republicans in Congress stand nearby explaining that the Constitution was probably being sarcastic.

This is more than a president testing the outer limits of executive power. It is personal rule carried out through manufactured emergencies and legal trapdoors. The Constitution says power is divided. Trump says power belongs to whoever can grab it, keep it, and surround it with enough lawyers to make theft sound procedural.

That is where Carl Schmitt enters this delightful little constitutional horror show. Schmitt, the Nazi political theorist now fashionable among certain members of the American right, argued that politics comes down to friends, enemies, and power. Law becomes secondary. The leader who declares the emergency also gets to decide when normal rules no longer apply. In other words, democracy remains open for business, but the owner has changed the locks.

Trump almost certainly has not read Schmitt. Trump rarely gives the impression that he has read the instructions on a bottle of shampoo. But he understands the central idea perfectly: announce a crisis, claim extraordinary authority, and treat anyone who objects as an enemy of the state, or at least a very unfair person who should be investigated on television.

The same trick now applies to war.

The Constitution gives Congress the authority to declare war because the founders had already dealt with kings who treated military adventures like personal hobbies. They did not want one man waking up angry, bombing another country before breakfast, and informing the elected representatives later.

Trump attacked Iran, notified Congress, and then claimed the hostilities had ended during a ceasefire, even though hostilities and a U.S. blockade continued. When military action was announced again in July, the administration called it a new engagement and restarted the War Powers clock. Legal analysts say that interpretation has no foundation in law or practice.

Apparently, war now works like a free trial subscription. Cancel it briefly, sign up again under a different email address, and enjoy another sixty days without congressional approval.

And because no aspiring monarch is complete without oversized architecture, Trump wants a triumphal arch in Washington.

Of course he does.

Nothing says humble public service like constructing a gigantic stone monument while you are still alive and pointing to yourself when someone asks who it honors. Federal law requires congressional authorization for a memorial at the proposed location, but the administration has not bothered to take the established route through Congress.

When a reporter asked who the arch was for, Trump pointed at himself and said, “Me.”

There it is. The entire philosophy of Trumpism reduced to one perfect syllable.

Me.

The tariffs are for me. The emergency powers are for me. The war authority is for me. The arch is for me. The government is for me. The country is for me.

Republican lawmakers, meanwhile, continue performing their constitutional duties as decorative shrubs. They remain technically present, require occasional watering, and create the vague impression that somebody is supervising the property.

The danger beneath the comedy is simple. Every shortcut around Congress is a shortcut around the American people. A president who can manufacture emergencies, work around court rulings, seize Congress’s taxing and war powers, and erect monuments to his own magnificence is not preserving constitutional government. He is training the public to accept that laws are for people without power.

Authoritarianism rarely arrives wearing a name tag. It arrives as necessity, urgency, patriotism, and strength. It promises to restore order while dismantling every institution capable of telling the leader no.

Trump’s version also arrives with merchandise.

America, apparently, is no longer a republic.

It is a gift shop with nuclear weapons.

The most dangerous thing about Trump is not that he hides his intentions. It is that he states them, wraps them in a joke, and counts on the rest of us to dismiss him.

Donald Trump went to the White House Correspondents’ Dinner and did what Donald Trump always does when handed a microphone: he made the evening about himself.

He insulted journalists, mocked people’s appearance and intelligence, complained when jokes did not land, and reminded the room that cruelty is still the only form of humor he truly understands. Then, near the end, he pulled out a red “Trump 2028” hat, placed it on his head, and teased another run for president.

Naturally, he said he was kidding.

Trump is always kidding when he says something alarming out loud. That is how the routine works. He floats an idea, watches the reaction, and keeps the escape hatch open. If his supporters cheer, he moves forward. If people recoil, he calls it a joke and accuses everyone else of being humorless.

The hat was not a punchline. It was a trial balloon with a brim.

I stopped finding these jokes funny a long time ago. A man who tried to overturn an election does not get the benefit of the doubt when he starts joking about staying in office beyond the constitutional limit. We already know how Trump behaves when the voters tell him no. He denies the result, attacks the system, pressures officials, blames imaginary conspiracies, and sends his followers looking for someone to punish.

That is not speculation. We watched it happen.

The Twenty-Second Amendment says a president cannot be elected more than twice. Most Americans would read that and conclude the matter is settled. Trump reads constitutional limits the way he reads a restaurant bill: as an opening offer that someone else should be forced to pay.

His defenders will tell us the hat was just merchandise. They will say liberals are panicking again. They always say that. Every threat is dismissed as a joke, every warning as hysteria, and every violation as old news. Then, when the next line is crossed, they insist nobody could have seen it coming.

But we have seen this method before.

First Trump says something outrageous. Then his allies laugh. Then conservative media discusses whether it might actually be legal. Then a Republican senator appears on television and claims the Founders never specifically addressed the issue. Before long, the unthinkable has become another topic for a Sunday morning panel.

That is the real purpose of the “Trump 2028” stunt. It makes the idea visible. It puts it on hats, in headlines, and into ordinary conversation. Repetition turns the shocking into the familiar. Once people become accustomed to hearing that Trump might remain in power, the constitutional violation starts sounding less like a crisis and more like a campaign strategy.

The room’s silence mattered. It is impossible to know what every person there was thinking, but it was difficult to hear that moment as harmless comedy. Trump was not an aging entertainer joking about one more tour. He was a sitting president with a documented history of refusing to accept defeat, wearing a hat that advertised another term he cannot constitutionally win.

That deserves more than nervous laughter.

Normal presidents eventually leave. They attend inaugurations, write memoirs, open libraries, and spend the rest of their lives pretending they do not check their approval ratings. Trump does not appear interested in becoming a former president again. Power is not public service to him. It is ownership.

The most dangerous thing about Trump is not that he hides his intentions. It is that he states them, wraps them in a joke, and counts on the rest of us to dismiss him.

Maybe the hat was trolling. Maybe it was branding. Maybe it was simply another attempt to dominate the evening. But given Trump’s record, treating it as meaningless would be foolish.

He says he is kidding.

America has already learned what that usually means.

“The political center did not suddenly become Marxist. The Republican Party moved so far to the right that Eisenhower’s platform now sounds like something MAGA would investigate for communist activity.”

Americans are constantly told that the Democratic Party has been captured by the “radical left.” Listen to conservative media for five minutes and you might assume Democrats are preparing to seize every farm, nationalize every diner, and replace the national anthem with a union song.

Then read the 1956 Republican Party platform.

President Dwight Eisenhower’s Republican Party supported expanding Social Security, strengthening unemployment insurance, improving public housing, increasing federal health protections, and providing federal assistance to construct public schools.

It celebrated a higher minimum wage and promised to extend minimum-wage protections to more workers. It defended collective bargaining, supported labor unions, called for equal pay for women, opposed employment discrimination, and proposed reforming the Taft-Hartley Act to better protect workers’ right to organize.

The same Republican platform supported a constitutional Equal Rights Amendment, federal civil-rights enforcement, school desegregation, voting rights for Washington, D.C., and an immigration system that offered refuge to oppressed people without racial, national, or religious discrimination.

In today’s Republican Party, much of this would be denounced as socialism, political correctness, federal overreach, or “woke Marxism.”

Today’s Democrats Are Center-Left Reformers

The modern Democratic Party is not a socialist party. It does not propose abolishing capitalism, eliminating private property, or transferring control of most businesses to the government.

Its national platform accepts private enterprise, private investment, market competition, and corporate ownership. Democrats propose regulating capitalism, taxing wealthy individuals and corporations more fairly, strengthening labor rights, and maintaining a public safety net.

The party supports a $15 federal minimum wage, stronger unions, paid family leave, affordable housing, environmental investment, and the protection of Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid. It has proposed increasing the corporate tax rate to 28 percent, which would still be below the 35 percent rate that existed before the 2017 Republican tax law.

That is not socialism. It is regulated capitalism with a stronger social contract.

The Democratic health-care program makes the point even more clearly. The party does not support nationalizing the entire medical system. Its approach works largely through the Affordable Care Act, Medicare, Medicaid, private insurance, tax subsidies, and negotiated prescription-drug prices.

“Medicare for All” was not adopted as the party’s national platform.

Calling these policies communism is not serious political analysis. It is marketing aimed at frightening people who have never been encouraged to learn what communism, socialism, or social democracy actually mean.

Democratic Socialists Are Further Left

Democratic socialists should not be falsely described as centrists. The Democratic Socialists of America openly seeks to replace capitalism with a democratic socialist system.

Its broader program includes public ownership of major corporations and essential industries, abolishing the Senate and Electoral College, replacing the two-party system, and restructuring the presidency and Supreme Court.

Those are genuinely left-wing and structurally radical proposals.

However, many individual policies associated with democratic socialism are far less radical than their opponents pretend.

Universal health care, paid family leave, public housing, affordable higher education, progressive taxation, strong labor protections, public transportation, and government investment in clean energy already exist throughout democratic capitalist countries.

These policies do not require Soviet-style government, political repression, or the abolition of private life. They are normal features of modern social democracies.

Wanting people to receive medical treatment without bankruptcy is not totalitarianism. Wanting workers to organize without being fired is not revolutionary violence. Wanting billionaires to pay higher taxes is not the abolition of freedom.

Some democratic socialist policies are clearly to the left of the American political center. Others would have been recognizable to the Republicans who governed during the Eisenhower administration.

MAGA Is the Radical Movement

The most dramatic ideological transformation has occurred inside the Republican Party.

The modern MAGA movement describes immigration as an “invasion” and promises the largest deportation operation in American history. It supports ideological screening, mass federal intervention in education, punishment of universities over political content, and the closure of the Department of Education.

The Republican platform promises to revoke visas and deport foreign nationals it identifies as pro-Hamas radicals or supporters of terrorism and jihadism. It also promises to make college campuses “safe and patriotic again.”

The concern is not whether the government may prosecute genuine criminal activity. It clearly may. The concern is the growing willingness to treat dissent, protest, immigration status, academic independence, and ideological disagreement as matters for presidential punishment.

MAGA politics increasingly revolves around grievance, cultural conformity, executive power, internal enemies, and personal loyalty to Donald Trump.

That is not Eisenhower conservatism.

The Fascism Question

The word fascism should not be thrown around casually. Not every Republican is a fascist, and the United States is not a fully established fascist state.

Courts, elections, state governments, independent journalists, civic organizations, opposition parties, and protest movements still exist.

But MAGA displays several recognizable fascistic or protofascist characteristics.

These include extreme nationalism, a cult of personality, the portrayal of immigrants and political opponents as internal enemies, hostility toward independent institutions, attacks on the legitimacy of elections, demands for personal loyalty, and efforts to impose an officially approved version of national history.

Trump has repeatedly described political opponents as enemies, criminals, traitors, and threats from within. His movement frequently treats independent judges, journalists, educators, civil servants, prosecutors, and election officials as illegitimate whenever they limit his authority.

That does not mean every MAGA policy is fascist. It means the movement’s larger direction has become authoritarian, nationalist, and increasingly hostile to pluralistic democracy.

That is why terms such as fascistic, authoritarian nationalist, and protofascist are more historically precise than simply declaring that every Republican is a fascist.

The distinction strengthens the argument because it places the focus where it belongs: on observable conduct, political structure, and the use of power.

The Great American Reversal

For decades, conservatives have moved the political goalposts while accusing everyone else of running toward the left.

Policies once supported by a Republican president are now portrayed as dangerous socialism. Basic labor rights are described as class warfare. Public health programs are treated as tyranny. Civil-rights enforcement is condemned as discrimination. Environmental protection is dismissed as a conspiracy against prosperity.

Meanwhile, proposals for mass deportation, ideological purges, presidential immunity, politicized law enforcement, government retaliation against critics, and loyalty-based public service are sold as ordinary conservatism.

They are not ordinary conservatism.

The Democratic Party remains a broad, cautious, corporate-influenced center-left coalition. Democratic socialists represent an actual left, although many of their immediate economic demands are standard social-democratic reforms.

MAGA, by contrast, has abandoned much of traditional conservatism for authoritarian nationalism.

The political center did not suddenly become Marxist.

The Republican Party moved so far to the right that Dwight Eisenhower’s platform now reads like something MAGA would investigate for communist activity.

“The goal is not to defeat Communism. The goal is to turn political opposition into treason.”

America is once again facing the gravest threat in its history, according to the same people who have identified twelve gravest threats since breakfast.

This time, it is Communism.

Not actual Communism, obviously. Workers are not seizing factories. Private property has not been abolished. Jeff Bezos has not been dragged off his yacht and forced to deliver his own packages.

This is television Communism, the cheaper American version. It now includes public schools, health insurance, labor unions, voting rights, clean energy, library books, bike lanes, and any coffee shop that serves oat milk without first saluting the flag.

The Republican messaging machine has its script. Cable news hosts are warming up the red-scare sirens. Social media patriots are making grainy memes of Democrats wearing Soviet hats. Somewhere in Washington, a consultant is adding a hammer and sickle to a photograph of a city councilwoman who suggested planting trees downtown.

The message is easy enough for everyone to remember.

Every Democrat is a Communist.

Every Republican defeat is Communist sabotage.

Every effort to count all the votes is suspiciously Marxist.

Why bother debating policies when you can accuse your opponent of plotting to nationalize everyone’s toaster?

Want affordable health care? Communist.

Think billionaires should pay taxes? Communist.

Believe presidents should follow the law? Deeply Communist.

Suggest feeding hungry schoolchildren? Stalin himself packed the applesauce.

The whole thing would be merely stupid if it were not also useful.

First, convince people that their Democratic neighbors are not just wrong, but dangerous. Then explain that elections are too important to be left to all those suspicious voters. Finally, announce that voting rules must be tightened, polling places reduced, ballots challenged, election workers threatened, and inconvenient results reviewed by a committee of patriotic men who all happen to own matching red hats.

Do not worry. These emergency measures will only be temporary.

They will end the moment Republicans are guaranteed to win forever.

The slickest part is that authoritarianism gets sold as protection from authoritarianism.

The government is not silencing critics. It is protecting the public from Communist misinformation.

It is not attacking journalists. It is defending America from radical fact-checking.

It is not interfering with elections. It is preventing dangerous voters from using ballots as weapons of mass democracy.

Soon, ordinary life may require an ideological background check.

Before entering a polling place, citizens could be asked whether they have ever shared a casserole, supported public transportation, or used the phrase “common good.” Anyone answering yes will be taken aside for additional screening and a short educational video narrated by Kid Rock.

Libraries will be searched for dangerous material, including books about civil rights, labor history, poverty, science, and the troubling theory that poor people are fully human.

Public parks may be investigated for encouraging people to enjoy publicly funded space without making a purchase.

Fire departments will face questions about why they distribute emergency services according to need rather than credit score.

Even highways could become suspect. Everyone using the same roads? Sounds collectivist.

The Communist threat has to remain vague because details would spoil the fun. Actual communists usually identify themselves as communists. The imaginary kind can be anyone Republicans need to discredit before the next election.

Teachers, judges, scientists, librarians, union members, students, immigrants, environmentalists, election workers, federal employees, and that aunt who keeps asking why insulin costs so much can all be tossed into the same giant sack labeled “Enemies of Freedom.”

The goal is not to defeat Communism. The goal is to turn political opposition into treason.

Once that trick is accepted, Republicans can never really lose.

If they win, the people rejected Communism.

If they lose, Communists stole the election.

Democracy becomes a vending machine that is only considered functional when it dispenses the snack Republicans selected in advance.

Yes, the whole production is ridiculous. It deserves mockery. It deserves laughter. It deserves a marching band made entirely of kazoos.

But it also deserves attention.

When politicians begin inventing enemies inside the country, they are usually preparing the public for what they want permission to do to those enemies.

The clown car is funny.

It is still heading toward the polling station.

And every clown inside it is carrying a clipboard, a blacklist, and a freshly manufactured emergency.

‘‘Communist’’ now means a Democrat with a calculator.

Joe McCarthy could crawl out of his grave tomorrow, brush off his suit, and march into Republican headquarters demanding to see the communist conspiracy destroying America.

They would hand him a proposal to lower insulin prices.

McCarthy would stare at it.

“That’s the communist plot?”

“Well, yes,” a Republican staffer would explain. “The government is trying to help people.”

Poor Joe. He spent his career hunting imaginary Soviet agents in Hollywood, universities, labor unions, and probably the State Department cafeteria. Now communism has apparently been reduced to affordable groceries, school lunches, rent assistance, and the dangerous idea that Americans should be able to visit a doctor without selling a kidney.

Republicans have simplified political science for the rest of us. If the government helps a hungry child eat lunch, that is Marxism. If the government gives billions to a politically connected corporation, that is the free market spreading its majestic wings.

Please try to keep up.

Joe might notice that the same party warning us about government control has been using public money to invest in favored industries, acquire stakes in private companies, recruit Wall Street bankers, and steer contracts toward businesses it considers important.

“Isn’t that government interference in the economy?” he might ask.

At that point, security would probably escort him out for asking a left-wing question.

The Republican economic philosophy is not difficult. Government must stay out of business unless business needs cash, contracts, protection, subsidies, loans, ownership guarantees, special treatment, or someone to clean up the wreckage after a billionaire drives the company into a ditch.

A struggling mother receiving grocery assistance is dependency. A struggling corporation receiving ten billion dollars is economic strategy.

A child gets a free sandwich and suddenly Lenin is kicking down the cafeteria door. A defense contractor gets a mountain of taxpayer money and the bald eagle starts singing “God Bless America.”

That is not socialism, you understand. Socialism is when ordinary people receive something. When rich people receive it, that is investment.

The real genius of the modern Republican Party is that it can accuse Democrats of communism while building a system where political power and corporate power climb into bed together, divide the public treasury, and then lecture everyone else about personal responsibility.

Nothing says rugged individualism quite like a corporation standing outside the Pentagon with its hand out.

Then there is the Saudi nuclear deal, because apparently this story needed a subplot rejected from a Bond movie for being too ridiculous.

Republicans warn that affordable health care could destroy American liberty, but a massive nuclear agreement benefiting private corporations and an authoritarian monarchy is celebrated as a commercial victory. Public money, private profit, limited oversight, and a ruler who has openly discussed obtaining nuclear weapons if Iran does. What could possibly go wrong?

Probably nothing. These people are famous for thinking ahead.

The same party terrified by an uncomfortable history book is remarkably calm about nuclear technology moving through a deal without the strongest international safeguards. A teacher mentioning racism is a national emergency. A crown prince mentioning nuclear weapons is a promising business opportunity.

This is where the old communist accusation becomes completely absurd.

Republicans do not object to government power. They object to government power being used for anyone outside their donor list. They are perfectly comfortable with a muscular state when it is enriching friendly corporations, intimidating critics, punishing opponents, deploying troops, or protecting the leader.

But suggest that Medicare negotiate a drug price and suddenly they are hiding under their desks from Chairman Mao.

McCarthy would eventually understand. There are no communists to find. The word no longer describes an economic system. It is simply the alarm Republicans pull whenever someone asks why groceries cost so much, why rent keeps rising, why health care remains unaffordable, or why another billionaire needs public assistance.

“Communist” now means a Democrat with a calculator.

It means anyone rude enough to notice that Republicans preach free markets while quietly constructing a private welfare state for corporations and wealthy insiders.

Their platform is clear: government should own nothing, regulate nothing, and help no one, unless one of their friends needs a few billion dollars, a guaranteed contract, or a taxpayer-funded rescue operation.

Communism is not government control anymore.

Communism is when the money reaches someone who actually needs it.

In Republican accounting, a clerical error becomes fraud when it benefits someone poor. When the Pentagon cannot account for billions, that is merely the fog of war.

America is broke again.

Not actually broke, of course. America is only broke when someone needs food, health care, disability assistance, legal representation, a park ranger, or an airport screener who does not work for the lowest-bidding contractor.

Then the nation pats its pockets, looks under the sofa cushions, and sadly announces that there is simply no money left.

Ask the Pentagon, though, and a glowing trapdoor opens beneath the Treasury Department.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth appeared before Congress asking for another $67 billion to keep the war in Iran going through September. This is the same war he told Americans had already achieved its objectives. Iran’s military was destroyed. Its capabilities were rendered ineffective. Victory had been delivered, presumably gift-wrapped, with a flag stuck in the top.

Now the Navy and Air Force are running out of operating money.

Apparently, destroying Iran is much more expensive after Iran has been destroyed.

Hegseth says the war has cost $37.5 billion so far, although independent analysts think the actual number is higher. Money is being pulled from maintenance, equipment, exercises, and training to keep the operation afloat. Congress is now being told that another enormous pile of cash is urgently needed to finish whatever was supposedly finished months ago.

Senator Jon Ossoff asked Hegseth a fairly simple question: Had the missile threat been defeated or not?

Hegseth responded with a rolling cloud bank of military vocabulary, underground facilities, combat effectiveness, scale, capabilities, state-sponsored terrorism, and other carefully arranged words that never wandered dangerously close to an answer.

Iran was defeated, but it still has missiles. Its military was destroyed, but it remains a serious threat. Every objective was achieved, but surrender never happened. The mission was a success, but the Pentagon needs $67 billion immediately.

Perfectly clear.

War in Washington now works like a cable company promotion. The victory is free for the first thirty days. After that, recurring charges apply, cancellation is impossible, and nobody at customer service can explain what package you are paying for.

While Congress searches for another mountain of money to drop into the Pentagon’s open mouth, Dee McDonald is skipping meals.

McDonald is 65, survived cancer, weighs 69 pounds, and is raising three teenage grandsons. She is one of roughly 440,000 Arizonans who have lost SNAP benefits since Republicans passed the One Big Beautiful Bill Act.

That name sounds less like legislation than something Donald Trump would order at a drive-through window.

The law made the deepest cuts to SNAP in the program’s history, expanded work requirements, and forced more of the cost onto states already struggling with federal cuts. Arizona has laid off about a third of its caseworkers, which naturally means longer delays, heavier workloads, and more mistakes.

Republicans then point to those mistakes as proof that SNAP is riddled with fraud.

Fire the caseworkers. Overload everyone left. Create errors. Blame the hungry people.

That is not an accident. That is the business model.

Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins has been celebrating the cuts and talking darkly about fraud, as though poor families have spent decades developing an elaborate criminal network based on canned beans and discounted cereal.

The fraud Republicans never seem able to find is the kind involving defense contractors, tax shelters, private-equity firms, pharmaceutical pricing, or companies billing the government $900 for a wrench. That kind of fraud comes with lobbyists, conference rooms, and campaign donations, so it is much harder to see.

But let a grandmother receive twelve dollars too much in grocery assistance because a caseworker entered the wrong code, and suddenly the republic is under siege.

In Republican accounting, a clerical error becomes fraud when it benefits someone poor. When the Pentagon cannot account for billions, that is merely the fog of war.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is getting in on the austerity carnival, too. His department is withholding more than a billion dollars in Medicaid money from California and Minnesota while demanding proof that payments are not fraudulent.

The federal government has not offered convincing public evidence for the scale of the punishment. It has simply frozen the money and told the states to prove their innocence.

That should work beautifully for sick people.

Nothing improves cancer treatment, prenatal care, disability services, or pediatric medicine like throwing a billion-dollar administrative crisis into the middle of the system.

The National Park Service is being gutted at the same time. Staff cuts, budget cuts, political interference, and the loss of experienced employees are doing damage that former ranger Bill Wade says may take decades to repair.

The parks belong to every American, which is apparently the problem. There is no private membership tier, no luxury box, and no preferred access for donors. A canyon does not care how much money you have. A forest refuses to recognize executive status. Very suspicious.

The administration is also reviving privatized airport screening, because the private screening system that existed before September 11 apparently deserves another chance.

Perhaps the thinking is that America has finally healed enough to begin forgetting why the Transportation Security Administration was created.

Privatization always arrives wearing a cheap suit and carrying a PowerPoint presentation about efficiency. Six months later, taxpayers are paying more, workers are earning less, and the company running the operation has hired three former officials as consultants.

Even injured soldiers are being told to tighten their belts.

The Army is reducing legal assistance for service members going through disability evaluations. Soldiers who once received counsel throughout the process may now get help at the beginning, then be left to represent themselves or pay for a private lawyer.

We do love the troops in this country.

We love them in commercials. We love them during football games. We love them when an eagle flies over the stadium and someone sings the national anthem badly.

When a wounded soldier needs help securing medical retirement benefits, however, he receives a brochure and the opportunity to admire the free market.

Then Senator Andy Kim proposes MediKids, which would automatically provide health coverage to every American child from birth through age 26.

The idea is dangerously simple. Children get sick. Doctors treat sick children. Parents should not have to empty their savings accounts because their child developed pneumonia.

Naturally, Republicans will call it unaffordable.

Food for a cancer survivor is wasteful. Medicaid for children is socialism. Lawyers for wounded soldiers are too expensive. Park rangers are expendable. Public airport security needs to be run like a franchise.

But $67 billion more for a war we already won?

Now you are talking about responsible government.

America is not running out of money. It is making choices.

And the choice is becoming painfully obvious: everything is affordable except taking care of people.

‘‘Trump is the alarm. The presidency is the fire.’’

That is what makes this moment so dangerous. The crisis is not only Donald Trump’s appetite for domination, revenge, spectacle, and personal immunity. The deeper crisis is that the American presidency had already grown too large, too secretive, too militarized, and too insulated from consequences before Trump returned to power and began treating the Constitution like a rental agreement he never intended to honor.

America was founded in rebellion against kings. Yet over time, the presidency has gathered many of the habits of monarchy: unilateral war-making, emergency decrees, secrecy, surveillance, pardon power, and a national security state that often operates beyond meaningful democratic oversight. Presidents now routinely claim powers the founders would have recognized as dangerous, even when exercised by people with better manners than Trump.

Trump’s difference is not that he discovered executive overreach. His difference is that he stripped away the polite language and exposed the authoritarian logic underneath. He does not pretend to respect institutional limits. He does not hide his contempt for legal accountability. He does not speak the language of constitutional humility. He sees power as possession, opposition as treason, law as inconvenience, and public office as an instrument of personal rule.

That makes him uniquely dangerous. But it does not make him accidental.

Trump is the result of a system that has spent decades teaching presidents that accountability is optional.

Presidents and their administrations have lied, overreached, spied, bombed, tortured, invaded, defied Congress, hidden behind secret legal memos, and walked away into libraries, book deals, speaking fees, and cable news nostalgia. Each failure to impose consequences made the next violation easier. Each “let’s move on” became an engraved invitation to the next leader willing to move further.

Authoritarianism does not arrive only through force. Sometimes it arrives through everyone else’s decision to wait and see.

That has been Trump’s method from the beginning. He pressure-tests the system. He pushes past one limit, watches the response, then pushes past the next. If Congress complains but does not act, he learns. If courts delay, he learns. If party leaders express alarm but refuse consequences, he learns. If the media treats every breach as another episode in the endless Trump series, he learns.

The lesson he absorbs is simple: more is possible.

That is how democratic erosion works. Not always with one dramatic seizure of power, but through repeated violations that become normalized because the official response is too slow, too timid, or too compromised to stop them. One day the unthinkable is shocking. The next day it is “controversial.” Soon it becomes merely “the way things are now.”

The American presidency has been moving in this direction for generations. The imperial presidency did not begin with Trump. Presidents have stretched war powers, used national security as a shield, and treated congressional authorization as a formality when inconvenient. Truman sent U.S. forces to Korea without a formal declaration of war. Johnson escalated Vietnam on a foundation of deception. Nixon expanded war into Cambodia and attacked democratic institutions at home. Officials in Reagan’s administration ran illegal covert operations during Iran-Contra. The Bush-Cheney administration built a post-9/11 machinery of torture, warrantless surveillance, and preventive war.

Obama did not operate in the same moral universe as Trump, Bush, or Cheney, and false equivalence helps no one. But even under Obama, drone warfare, executive secrecy, and the refusal to prosecute Bush-era abuses helped preserve the pattern. The message to future presidents remained intact: the office may be criticized, but its deepest abuses will often be protected in the name of stability.

That word, stability, has done a lot of damage.

After the Bush-Cheney years, the country was told to look forward, not backward. It sounded reasonable, even healing. The nation was exhausted. The Iraq War had discredited the political class. Torture had stained America’s moral standing. Millions wanted normalcy. But a republic cannot heal from high crimes by refusing to confront them. It cannot look forward by placing a curtain over the past and calling that maturity.

“Looking forward” often means the powerful escape consequences while the public is instructed to move on.

That refusal to reckon with presidential lawlessness did not disappear. It hardened into precedent. Trump understood what establishment figures did not want to admit: impunity compounds. When a president learns that illegal or unconstitutional behavior produces outrage but not accountability, the next president does not become more restrained. He becomes more ambitious.

This is the moral rot at the center of the crisis. Democracy depends on more than elections. It depends on the expectation that power has limits and that crossing those limits carries a cost. When leaders lie the country into war and remain honored public figures, democracy weakens. When officials authorize torture and retire into respectability, democracy weakens. When presidents defy Congress and face no meaningful sanction, democracy weakens. When a president tries to overturn an election and remains a viable leader of a major political party, democracy is no longer merely polarized. It is in constitutional decay.

A republic cannot survive if the law becomes a suggestion for the powerful and a weapon for everyone else.

Congress bears enormous responsibility for this decay. It was never designed to be a commentary panel on presidential misconduct. It was designed to be a coequal branch of government. Yet again and again, Congress has surrendered authority to the executive branch, especially in matters of war, emergency power, surveillance, and national security. Members of Congress prefer to complain about presidential overreach when the other party controls the White House, then rediscover flexibility when their own side is in power.

This hypocrisy has hollowed out constitutional government. War powers become negotiable. Emergency powers become political tools. Oversight becomes theater. Subpoenas become bargaining chips. Impeachment becomes unthinkable until it is too late, then somehow still too divisive to use with full force.

Congress cannot defend democracy while outsourcing courage to the courts and press releases.

The courts matter, of course. They can block abuses, interpret laws, and reaffirm constitutional limits. But they cannot save a republic alone. Courts are slow. They are reactive. They depend on enforcement. They are also increasingly politicized and vulnerable to legitimacy crises of their own. A president willing to exploit delay can do enormous damage before a final ruling arrives. A movement willing to attack judges can turn lawful restraint into partisan theater. A party willing to excuse anything can transform every legal proceeding into a grievance machine.

The courts are a guardrail. They are not a substitute for democratic will.

This is why accountability cannot be treated as a distraction from governance. It is governance. Subpoenas, investigations, impeachment proceedings, contempt enforcement, ethics rules, criminal referrals, inspector general protections, and public hearings are not sideshows when democracy is under attack. They are among the tools democracy uses to defend itself.

Too many Democratic leaders have treated accountability as a messaging problem. They fear looking partisan. They fear alienating swing voters. They fear appearing obsessed with Trump. But refusing accountability is not neutrality. It is permission. The public does not gain faith in institutions when leaders announce that crimes against the system are too inconvenient to pursue. The public loses faith when it sees that consequences are reserved for the powerless.

Not every abuse requires impeachment. But every serious abuse requires a consequence.

That principle must apply across party lines. The presidency should be smaller no matter who occupies it. Liberals should not want a Democratic king any more than they want a Republican one. If democracy depends on the personal virtue of the president, then democracy has already failed structurally. The system must be built for the worst person who might hold power, not the best person we hope will.

That means reforming the office itself.

Congress should reclaim war powers and make unauthorized military action trigger automatic funding cutoffs. Emergency powers should expire quickly unless Congress renews them. Major conflicts between Congress and the president should receive expedited court review. Inspectors general should be protected from retaliation. Contempt of Congress should be enforceable without years of delay. Secret legal opinions that authorize sweeping executive power should not be allowed to function as hidden constitutions. The pardon power should be examined when used to shield co-conspirators or obstruct accountability. Presidents who use official power to subvert elections must face clear criminal exposure, not procedural fog.

These reforms are not radical. They are republican in the oldest sense. They are rooted in the recognition that power must be limited because human beings are not angels, and presidents are not national parents, redeemers, CEOs, generals, priests, or kings. They are public servants entrusted with temporary authority under law.

Trump has made the danger visible because he is incapable of subtlety. He has shown us what happens when an already swollen presidency falls into the hands of a man who experiences restraint as humiliation. But the answer cannot be limited to defeating one man. If America removes Trumpism from office while leaving the imperial presidency intact, the next crisis is already being prepared.

The deeper question is what kind of presidency we are willing to tolerate after Trump.

Do we want to return to the comforting illusion that the problem was only one man? Or are we ready to admit that unchecked power will keep attracting those most eager to abuse it?

The American Revolution was not fought so the country could spend two and a half centuries rebuilding the royal presidency under another name. A republic survives only when power is limited, law is enforced, and accountability is stronger than fear.

Trump is the alarm. The presidency is the fire.

The presidency must be made smaller than democracy again.

Mitch waits in bureaucratic hell, surrounded by the political monsters he helped create.

Let us begin with the necessary disclaimer: Mitch McConnell is alive (as far as we know).

We know this because his office released a photograph of him beside his wife, Elaine Chao, holding a current newspaper like a kidnapped railroad baron confirming that the ransom instructions are genuine. The photograph followed weeks of public silence after McConnell fell at home on June 14, briefly lost consciousness, and was hospitalized. He later disclosed that he had also been treated for pneumonia and was not yet able to return to the Senate.

Everyone should wish him a full recovery. Illness is not a moral failure, and old age is not a punchline.

Mitch McConnell’s political career, however, remains available for ridicule.

So, where in the hell is he?

Perhaps we have been searching the wrong Washington. Maybe McConnell has entered the federal government’s version of the afterlife waiting room from Beetlejuice, where the dead, the politically undead, and members of the Senate Rules Committee sit beneath flickering fluorescent lights while a receptionist stamps forms nobody has read.

Picture him there, hands folded, expression motionless. A sign above the counter reads:

NOW SERVING DEMOCRACY, NUMBER 1787.

Beside him sits a Confederate ghoul with a shrunken head. Across the room, a lobbyist has been flattened by a falling stack of tax loopholes. Beetlejuice himself is pacing in frustration because even he cannot get a straight answer from the Senate parliamentarian.

“Mitch,” he finally says, “you have to leave. You’re making the place creepy.”

McConnell does not move. He has waited out presidents, reform movements, government shutdowns, public outrage, and several recognizable forms of human emotion. Waiting rooms are his natural habitat.

The dark joke is that McConnell spent decades constructing a political underworld that no longer has much use for him. He transformed routine Senate obstruction into an art form, denied Barack Obama’s Supreme Court nominee a hearing in 2016, then rushed Amy Coney Barrett onto the Court shortly before the 2020 presidential election. He also helped confirm 200 Trump nominees to lifetime federal judgeships.

He built the institutional machinery Donald Trump now operates with the delicacy of a raccoon driving a bulldozer.

Then the MAGA movement swallowed the Republican Party, burped loudly, and asked what McConnell had done for it lately.

McConnell remains Kentucky’s senator and chairman of the Senate Rules Committee. He has announced that he will not seek reelection this November and will leave office when his term ends on January 3, 2027. He may be approaching the exit, but his absence still matters because the Republican Senate majority is narrow and every missing vote can alter the outcome.

That became painfully clear on June 23, when the Senate voted 50-48 for a resolution directing Trump to end unauthorized American military involvement in Iran. McConnell was one of two absent Republicans. For once, the machinery he helped build moved without him, and it rolled directly over the president’s preferred result.

The deepest mystery, though, is not where Mitch McConnell has been physically. We now have a general answer. He is recovering.

The real question is where he has been morally for the past decade.

Where was he when Trump attacked the legitimacy of elections? Where was he when Republican politics became a fever swamp of conspiracy, cruelty, and contempt for constitutional government? Usually, he was exactly where he needed to be to count the votes, confirm the judges, collect the victories, and explain afterward that someone else had made everything unpleasant.

McConnell did not create every monster now roaming the Republican Party. He merely opened the laboratory, supplied the electricity, locked the doors, and dismissed the screaming as a procedural matter.

So, where in the hell is Mitch McConnell?

Politically speaking, he helped build it, furnished it, confirmed its judges, and handed Donald Trump the keys.

Now he may simply be waiting for his number to be called.

Trump does not need to cancel an election if he can frighten, disrupt, and discredit it.

There is no public evidence proving that Donald Trump is deliberately baiting Iran into an attack so he can sabotage the November 3 midterm elections. That must be stated plainly. A theory does not become fact merely because it fits the character of the man being accused.

But dismissing the question as paranoid would be equally irresponsible. Trump is escalating an unpopular war, attacking congressional authority, reviving lies about election fraud, pressuring states to accept federal election demands, and suggesting that the country should not hold an election his party might lose.

Those are not disconnected facts. They form a pattern that deserves scrutiny before a crisis gives him the opportunity to act.

Trump introduced the idea himself. While discussing the tendency of a president’s party to lose seats in the midterms, he complained that Republicans should not have to run against Democrats and said that the country should not even have an election.

The White House called it a joke.

But Trump has spent a decade laundering authoritarian intentions through humor, provocation, denial, and repetition. First he says the unacceptable thing. Then his staff insists he was joking. Then his allies begin arguing that it might be necessary.

Iran could provide the emergency.

Trump has expanded military operations against Iran while resisting congressional efforts to limit his authority. After hostilities resumed, he claimed that the renewed fighting created a fresh period during which he could continue military action without additional approval from Congress.

When lawmakers challenged him, Trump accused them of weakening America and giving comfort to the enemy.

That accusation matters. Trump routinely equates disagreement with disloyalty. In his political vocabulary, opposition to the president becomes opposition to the country. During wartime, that habit becomes especially dangerous because every critic, protester, journalist, election official, and opposition candidate can be portrayed as undermining America while troops are under attack.

Is Trump intentionally trying to produce Iranian retaliation? We cannot know.

Iran is responsible for its own actions, and its leaders are not pieces on Trump’s chessboard. The escalation may be driven by incompetence, ideology, vanity, political pressure, or Trump’s familiar belief that violence will force everyone else to submit.

Yet political intent is not the only issue. Political opportunity matters too.

An Iranian strike on American forces, a cyberattack on public infrastructure, violence around an embassy, disruption of international shipping, or even an unsupported allegation of foreign election interference could be used to declare the midterms unsafe, compromised, or illegitimate.

Trump would not need to stop every polling place from opening. He would need enough disruption, intimidation, litigation, and manufactured uncertainty to make Democratic victories appear fraudulent.

The groundwork is already visible. Trump has revived discredited claims about the 2020 election, promoted unsupported allegations of foreign interference, demanded restrictive federal voting legislation, and called for prosecutions. His administration has pressured states to comply with federal demands involving voter eligibility and citizenship checks.

This is not election security. It is election preemption, discrediting the vote before it occurs so that only a Republican victory can be treated as legitimate.

Trump cannot unilaterally cancel or postpone the midterms. Article I of the Constitution gives state legislatures and Congress authority over the times, places, and manner of congressional elections. Federal law establishes Election Day as the Tuesday after the first Monday in November of every even-numbered year.

The president cannot erase that law through a proclamation, an emergency declaration, or an expansive claim of wartime authority.

But illegality has never been a reliable restraint on this president.

The danger is that a wartime emergency could become the justification for a sequence of abuses: federal agents deployed around demonstrations or polling locations, states threatened with lost funding, election workers investigated, mail ballots challenged, emergency voting accommodations blocked, and unfavorable results blamed on Iran, China, immigrants, communists, or “left-wing terrorists.”

Trump understands that an election does not have to be formally canceled to be successfully sabotaged.

It can be burdened, frightened, discredited, delayed, and thrown into courts controlled by judges he appointed. It can be followed by threats against officials responsible for certification. It can be drowned in enough lies that millions of Americans no longer know what happened, whom to trust, or whether the result should be accepted.

The midterms represent a direct threat to Trump’s power. The loss of Congress could bring investigations, subpoenas, blocked legislation, restrictions on war funding, and serious oversight of an administration that has operated as though constitutional limits were optional.

That gives Trump an obvious motive to discredit the election before the votes are counted.

There is still no proof that the Iran war is part of a deliberate election-sabotage scheme. But there is ample reason to believe Trump would exploit a wartime emergency to protect his power. His own words, his attacks on election administration, and his contempt for constitutional limits have earned that suspicion.

The question is not whether Trump possesses the constitutional authority to cancel the midterms. He does not.

The question is whether he is creating the fear, disorder, and foreign enemy he would need to persuade enough Americans that democracy must be weakened to save the country from a crisis he helped create.

“The regime manufactures enemies because fear makes authoritarian power look necessary.”

Donald Trump is not relitigating the 2020 election because he has discovered new evidence. He is reviving the Big Lie because the 2026 midterms are approaching, Republican control is vulnerable, and an autocrat must discredit any election he might lose before the votes are counted.

In his nationally televised July 16 address, Trump claimed to present proof of mass fraud and foreign manipulation. The documents proved no such thing. According to the Associated Press, they did not establish that foreign actors changed votes, that alleged noncitizens cast ballots, or that a Michigan registration case involved prosecutable election crimes. Yet the administration immediately used these recycled suspicions to demand more power over state election systems. Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin threatened resistant states with investigations, lost funding, penalties, and possible prosecution. Courts have already rejected major parts of this federal pressure campaign.

That sequence matters. First comes the accusation. Then comes the demand for extraordinary authority. When evidence fails, the accusation remains, because the purpose was never to prove fraud. The purpose was to manufacture permission.

Election denialism is no longer merely an excuse for Trump’s defeat in 2020. It is now a prospective weapon against accountability in 2026. The emerging rule is brutally simple: Republican victories are legitimate, Democratic victories are suspicious, and any institution that refuses to ratify Trump’s version of reality becomes part of the conspiracy.

The Constitution says otherwise. States and Congress possess the principal authority to regulate federal elections. The president has no general power to command local election offices, seize sensitive voter data, impose registration rules by decree, or convert the Department of Homeland Security into his personal ballot police. A president who claims those powers is not defending election integrity. He is attacking the constitutional distribution of power that protects it.

The communist scare serves the same project. Reuters reported that Trump invoked communism 81 times in roughly two weeks while his political operation tested the language as a midterm message. This is not political philosophy. It is market research for a panic.

Universal health care is not communism. Affordable housing is not communism. Labor rights, progressive taxation, public education, environmental protection, and restraints on corporate power are not communism. They are policies debated and enacted through constitutional democracy. Trump calls them communist because defending oligarchy is much harder than frightening voters with an imaginary revolution.

The insult also performs a more sinister function. It recasts political opponents as alien enemies whose ideas fall outside legitimate American debate. The tactic is old. Segregationists called civil rights organizers communists. McCarthy destroyed lives by treating association and suspicion as evidence. Every Red Scare has allowed powerful people to present demands for equality as foreign contamination.

Now the administration is adding the word “terrorist.”

Secretary of State Marco Rubio recently announced that American counterterrorism policy would place greater emphasis on what he calls far-left terrorism. Political violence from the left is real, and progressives should condemn it without hesitation. Arson, assault, threats, conspiracy, and murder should be investigated and prosecuted based on evidence, regardless of ideology.

But evidence also demands proportion. CSIS found that left-wing attacks and plots rose in 2025 from very low levels, while remaining historically less lethal than violence from the far right and jihadist extremists. A government interested in public safety would examine every threat consistently. A regime interested in power selects an ideology, exaggerates its reach, and blurs the line between criminal violence and lawful dissent.

That blur is the danger. “Communist” brands the opponent as illegitimate. “Terrorist” summons the security state. “Fraud” poisons trust in the ballot. Combined, the three claims create a closed authoritarian argument: the opposition is subversive, its supporters are dangerous, and its victories cannot be trusted.

This is how constitutional government is inverted. Instead of prosecuting conduct, the state targets identity and belief. Instead of protecting elections, it pressures election officials. Instead of accepting defeat, it investigates the winners. Instead of treating dissent as a protected feature of republican government, it portrays dissent as evidence of disloyalty.

The Republican Party once claimed to believe in federalism, limited executive power, local control, free speech, and suspicion of centralized government. Those principles have collapsed into one principle: power is dangerous when Democrats exercise it and sacred when Trump does.

Progressives must answer with more than outrage. We must reclaim constitutional patriotism from people who use the flag as camouflage. The Constitution protects workers, minorities, immigrants, protesters, reformers, democratic socialists, and every person whose rights do not depend on presidential approval.

The choice before America is not simply left against right. It is constitutional citizenship against personal rule. Trump needs the fraud story to discredit elections. He needs the communist story to demonize reform. He needs the terrorism story to justify repression.

He is manufacturing an enemy before the election because fear is how he intends to rule after it.

“America did not suddenly lose its way. It built this hell one normalized injustice at a time.”

America did not suddenly lose its mind.

It did not become cruel, irrational, oligarchic, and authoritarian on the day Donald Trump descended an escalator. Trump did not arrive from outside the American experience. He emerged from forces that had been accumulating within it for generations.

The present crisis is the visible consequence of a long civilizational process.

In Civilizational New Thought, I argued that consciousness does not remain confined inside individuals. It becomes language, culture, law, economics, media, technology, architecture, and public morality. Shared assumptions eventually harden into institutions. Institutions then shape the consciousness of the people born inside them. A civilization is, in this sense, consciousness arranged at scale.

This is how America descended into its present hell. Beliefs became stories. Stories became customs. Customs became policies. Policies became institutions. Institutions became environments. Over time, arrangements created by human beings came to appear natural, permanent, and beyond revision.

The hell was built gradually.

The Founding Contradiction

America was founded upon a declaration of equality and a practice of domination.

Its language was universal, but its political community was not. Enslaved people, Indigenous peoples, women, laborers without property, and many others were excluded from the freedom the nation proclaimed.

This contradiction was not a minor defect in an otherwise completed democracy. It was embedded in the nation’s original consciousness. America learned early how to speak the language of liberty while organizing material life around hierarchy.

That habit became one of the country’s defining spiritual pathologies.

The nation would repeatedly announce a moral ideal, violate it in practice, and protect its self-image by minimizing the contradiction. The story of American innocence became more important than the lives excluded from it.

This is separation consciousness in political form. It imagines that one person’s freedom can rest upon another person’s subjugation. It divides humanity into those entitled to dignity and those who may be used, displaced, confined, exploited, or erased.

Reconstruction Was Abandoned

The Civil War ended legal slavery, and the Reconstruction Amendments established citizenship and voting rights for Black Americans. The Fifteenth Amendment, ratified in 1870, formally prohibited denying the vote on the basis of race.

But the country lacked the sustained moral will to enforce its own transformation.

Federal protection receded. White supremacist violence, discriminatory laws, poll taxes, literacy tests, employment threats, and physical intimidation stripped Black citizens of political power. Jim Crow segregation was systematically imposed across public life, while sharecropping, debt peonage, and other economic arrangements preserved dependency and generational poverty.

America did not merely fail to complete Reconstruction. It normalized the betrayal of Reconstruction.

That failure taught a lasting political lesson: democratic rights could be promised in constitutional language and denied through administration, violence, local control, judicial retreat, and public exhaustion.

The pattern remains recognizable. When direct exclusion becomes unacceptable, domination searches for procedural language. It calls itself order, security, states’ rights, electoral integrity, fiscal responsibility, or tradition.

The vocabulary changes. The consciousness survives.

Civil Rights Progress Provoked a Countermovement

The civil rights movement forced the United States to confront some of its most obvious contradictions. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 attacked segregation and employment discrimination. The Voting Rights Act of 1965 targeted racial restrictions on political participation.

These victories changed the country. They did not erase the consciousness that had made the victories necessary.

As previously excluded Americans demanded full citizenship, many others experienced equality as personal loss. The expansion of freedom was interpreted as the displacement of those who had assumed that the country belonged primarily to them.

Racial resentment did not always speak openly. It migrated into arguments over crime, taxation, welfare, schools, neighborhoods, immigration, affirmative action, and the meaning of patriotism.

This was one of the decisive steps toward the present. America’s unresolved racial hierarchy fused with cultural grievance. Political movements learned that fear of social change could be organized more effectively than a positive vision of shared democracy.

Equality became suspicious. Diversity became invasion. Compassion became weakness. Government became illegitimate whenever it protected people who had previously been excluded.

The Market Became a Moral Authority

Another major descent occurred when the market ceased to be treated as one social instrument among many and came to be treated as the final judge of human value.

Wealth became evidence of merit. Poverty became evidence of failure. Competition became human nature. Accumulation became freedom. Corporate success became a measure of social good, even when it depended upon exploitation, environmental destruction, political influence, or manufactured scarcity.

Citizens were gradually recast as consumers. Workers became costs. Communities became markets. Homes became investment assets. Healthcare became a commodity. Education became workforce preparation. Nature became inventory.

This is the consciousness examined in From “The Secret” to the Sacred. Consumer culture absorbed spiritual language and transformed it into a theology of personal acquisition. Structural power vanished from view. Success supposedly demonstrated proper consciousness, while suffering supposedly revealed defective thinking.

That distortion is confronted directly in The Poor Are Not Failed Manifesters. Hunger, homelessness, polluted neighborhoods, medical debt, underfunded schools, and inherited poverty cannot honestly be reduced to personal vibration. The poor are not spiritually deficient people who failed to attract better conditions. They are human beings living within institutions that distribute security, opportunity, danger, and deprivation unequally.

The economic consequences are visible. Union membership fell from 20.1 percent of wage and salary workers in 1983 to 10 percent in 2025, weakening one of the major institutions through which working people had exercised collective power.

This was not merely an economic change. It was a change in civilizational consciousness. Organized labor had taught people to think in terms of solidarity, bargaining power, mutual interest, and shared gains. Its decline left more Americans isolated before concentrated capital.

Deregulation Converted Greed Into Governance

The doctrine of market supremacy did not remain an opinion. It became policy.

Regulation was portrayed as interference. Public institutions were described as inefficient by definition. Privatization was treated as liberation. Tax cuts for the wealthy were sold as universal prosperity. Corporate concentration was allowed to deepen while the language of individual choice concealed vast inequalities of power.

The 2008 financial crisis exposed the consequences. The Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission concluded that the disaster was avoidable and resulted from regulatory failures, breakdowns in corporate governance, excessive risk-taking, poor preparation, and systemic failures of accountability and ethics. Regulators often possessed authority they chose not to use.

Millions of people lost jobs, homes, savings, and security. Yet many of the institutions responsible survived through public rescue.

That experience delivered a devastating moral education. Ordinary people learned that markets were supposedly unforgiving when families needed help but suddenly flexible when financial institutions faced collapse.

Profits were private. Catastrophic losses became public.

The crisis helped destroy confidence in establishment leadership. It also created fertile ground for demagogues who could redirect legitimate anger away from concentrated wealth and toward immigrants, racial minorities, government workers, intellectuals, journalists, and other manufactured enemies.

Economic betrayal became cultural resentment.

Fear Became a Permanent Political Resource

The attacks of September 11, 2001, inflicted genuine trauma. They also accelerated a politics organized around fear.

The USA PATRIOT Act was developed amid intense public anxiety and expanded federal powers in the name of preventing future attacks.

The deeper transformation was cultural. Surveillance, secrecy, preventive force, indefinite war, executive power, and suspicion of outsiders became easier to defend. Fear shortened public deliberation. Complexity appeared dangerous. Dissent could be framed as disloyalty.

Once fear becomes a governing atmosphere, populations become more willing to surrender rights in exchange for promised protection.

That pattern extends beyond terrorism. Crime, immigration, protest, disease, demographic change, economic insecurity, and political opposition can all be framed as existential emergencies. The frightened citizen is encouraged to stop asking whether power is just and start asking whether power is ruthless enough.

This is the psychology explored in Authoritarianism Is the Ego Wearing a Flag. Private fear can become public force. Insecurity seeks certainty. Humiliation seeks revenge. The frightened ego longs for a leader who will eliminate ambiguity, punish enemies, and restore a mythical order.

The authoritarian does not heal fear. He gives it a uniform.

The Information Commons Was Destroyed

Democracy requires more than elections. It requires some shared means of determining what is real.

America gradually replaced a common information environment with competing attention markets.

The repeal of the Fairness Doctrine in 1987 did not single-handedly create partisan media, nor would restoring it solve the modern information crisis. Still, its repeal belonged to a broader shift toward treating broadcast communication primarily as a commercial marketplace rather than a civic responsibility.

Talk radio, partisan cable news, digital publishing, and social media fragmented the public sphere. Information became increasingly tailored to identity. Audiences were not merely informed. They were selected, cultivated, emotionally activated, and sold.

Social-media platforms intensified the transformation. Research has shown that personalization algorithms can amplify political content unevenly and that social rewards encourage users to repeat expressions of moral outrage.

Anger became engagement. Engagement became revenue.

This is precisely what Civilizational New Thought means when it says media does not merely reflect consciousness. Media trains consciousness. It directs attention, rewards emotional habits, establishes recurring enemies, and disciplines perception into fear, desire, outrage, or numbness.

The result is a country in which millions of people no longer merely disagree about policy. They inhabit competing moral realities.

By 2022, large majorities of both Republicans and Democrats described members of the opposing party as unusually closed-minded or dishonest. Many also regarded the opposition as immoral.

Once opponents become embodiments of evil, democratic restraint begins to look like surrender.

Institutions Taught Americans Who to Become

In What You Normalize, You Build, I argued that what a society repeatedly excuses does not remain private. It becomes infrastructure, culture, and moral weather.

Institutions are not neutral machines. They educate consciousness.

An economy teaches whether people are neighbors or competitors. A workplace teaches whether dignity is inherent or conditional. A justice system teaches whether harm should be repaired or avenged. A food system teaches whether sentient beings possess lives of their own or exist merely as production units. A media system teaches whether truth is a public trust or an instrument of profit. A government teaches whether citizens are participants, customers, suspects, or subjects.

This is why the American crisis cannot be explained as a collection of individual moral failures.

People were formed inside systems that rewarded aggression, consumption, self-promotion, obedience, extraction, and emotional spectacle. They were told to seek private success inside conditions they had little power to shape. When those conditions failed them, they were encouraged to blame themselves or a vulnerable out-group.

America produced widespread loneliness and then marketed tribal hatred as belonging.

It produced precarity and then offered scapegoats.

It weakened democratic organizations and then wondered why people sought strength in authoritarian personalities.

Trump Was the Symptom That Became an Accelerator

Donald Trump did not create America’s underlying consciousness of domination, racial grievance, greed, spectacle, misogyny, impunity, or narcissism.

He recognized its political usefulness.

He converted resentment into identity. He gave humiliation a target. He turned shamelessness into supposed authenticity and cruelty into a performance of strength. He offered millions of people permission to abandon restraint while insisting that they were recovering freedom.

He did not offer a coherent philosophy of government. He offered emotional absolution.

Followers were told that they had done nothing wrong, lost nothing through their own choices, and owed nothing to people outside the movement. Their suffering was real, but its causes were redirected. Instead of concentrated wealth, weakened labor, predatory finance, inaccessible healthcare, technological disruption, or political abandonment, they were given immigrants, minorities, universities, journalists, queer people, public servants, and political opponents.

In The Necessary Disruptor, I interpreted Trump as an eruption of the collective shadow. He made visible what the nation preferred to conceal.

But a disruptor is not automatically a healer. Exposure creates an opportunity for awakening, not a guarantee.

The danger is now measurable. Freedom House reported that the United States experienced one of the sharpest democratic declines among countries still classified as free during 2025. Its score fell to 81 out of 100, extending a substantial decline since 2005.

On July 16, 2026, Trump used a presidential address to revive unsupported claims concerning the 2020 election and to promote new voting restrictions before the midterm elections. His allegations contradicted central conclusions of an earlier American intelligence assessment.

This is how democratic erosion proceeds. Elections may continue. Courts may remain open. Legislatures may still meet. The flag still flies.

But the underlying norms of truthful government, lawful restraint, independent institutions, pluralism, and peaceful political competition are weakened until the forms of democracy remain without its spirit.

Religion and Spirituality Failed the Public Test

America has never lacked religious language. It has lacked the courage to embody its highest religious claims.

Much of conservative Christianity exchanged the moral radicalism of Jesus for nationalism, patriarchy, punishment, wealth, and political power. Faith became a badge of tribal membership rather than a demand for compassion, humility, and solidarity.

At the same time, much of progressive spirituality retreated into private peace, personal manifestation, and therapeutic self-improvement.

Both responses abandoned the world.

New Thought for a World on Fire rejects the idea that positive thinking requires silence about suffering. Mature New Thought does not blame people for poverty, illness, oppression, trauma, or grief. It understands that personal healing and collective healing belong to one another.

When I Was Hungry: The Spiritual Crime of Withholding applies that principle directly. A society reveals its spiritual condition through its treatment of people in need. Refusing food, shelter, healthcare, or basic security is not merely a budgetary choice. It is a declaration about whose life counts.

Spirituality that cannot confront organized cruelty becomes an accessory to it.

Prayer without action becomes performance. Forgiveness without accountability becomes protection for abusers. Peace without justice becomes the comfort of those who do not bear the cost.

The Treatment of Animals Reveals the Same Consciousness

America’s violence toward animals is not separate from its political and economic crisis.

The same consciousness of separation that permits workers to be treated as costs, the poor as failures, immigrants as threats, and nature as inventory also permits sentient animals to be reduced to commodities.

Industrial animal agriculture is a civilizational institution. It teaches domination through daily consumption. It hides suffering behind packaging, distance, euphemism, and routine. It trains people to accept that another being’s body, confinement, reproductive system, fear, and death may be treated as raw material.

A philosophy of oneness that excludes animals is not oneness. It is human supremacy dressed in spiritual language.

My broader work has consistently joined democracy, justice, ecology, animal suffering, economics, and authoritarianism because they arise from related assumptions about power and belonging.

A civilization cannot repeatedly practice domination against the vulnerable and expect that consciousness to remain inside one institution.

What we normalize anywhere, we strengthen everywhere.

Why Normal Cannot Save Us

There is a temptation to imagine that America can simply return to normal.

But normal produced this.

Normal was declining worker power, racialized inequality, mass incarceration, commodified healthcare, ecological destruction, concentrated media, legalized political influence, endless war, animal exploitation, and a spirituality often too privatized to confront any of it.

Trumpism did not destroy a healthy order. It exploited the failures of an unhealthy one.

Replacing one leader without transforming the conditions that produced him will postpone the crisis, not resolve it.

The answer is not restoration. It is reconstruction.

From Inner Awakening to Collective Power

Civilizational transformation begins in consciousness, but it cannot end there.

As I argue in From Inner Awakening to Collective Power, private insight does not automatically become social change. Meditation can reduce reactivity. Prayer can strengthen courage. Self-examination can expose fear and resentment. But positive thought alone does not rewrite a law, democratize a workplace, feed a child, protect an animal, or stop a government from abusing power.

Inner work prepares us for the work. It does not replace the work.

Compassion must acquire organization, resources, continuity, strategy, and democratic power. A generous individual can provide a meal. An organized community can create a food network. A compassionate institution can help prevent hunger. A protest can express outrage. A movement can change law.

Enduring injustice is organized. Justice must be organized too.

This requires recovering unions, cooperatives, mutual-aid networks, civic organizations, independent journalism, democratic movements, ethical spiritual communities, and public institutions capable of making compassion durable.

It also requires a different understanding of power.

Power is not only the ability to dominate. It is the ability to protect, cooperate, create, decide, organize, and meet human needs. Spiritual people do not preserve their purity by ignoring power. They merely leave power to those willing to use it without conscience.

Justice Must Become Applied Oneness

In Justice as Oneness, I argued that a justice system is a society’s theology made public. A culture rooted in separation tends toward punishment, exclusion, humiliation, and revenge. A culture rooted in oneness seeks truth, accountability, restoration, protection, and repair.

Oneness does not mean pretending harm did not occur. It does not mean demanding premature forgiveness or allowing dangerous behavior to continue.

It means refusing the idea that suffering automatically heals suffering.

The same principle applies to economics. In The Common Good and the One Mind, I brought New Thought into conversation with democratic socialism. If all life participates in one Life, then political and economic institutions should reflect cooperation, shared dignity, democratic participation, and the common good.

A consciousness of abundance that excludes others is not abundance. It is privilege.

Resourceism and the Civilizational Alternative

Resourceism extends this transformation further.

It begins from the recognition that Earth’s material wealth, including food, water, energy, minerals, land, technology, and knowledge, should be governed as a common inheritance rather than distributed primarily according to purchasing power and private profit.

The Resourceism Declaration proposes a moneyless, resource-based system organized around universal access, ecological sustainability, participatory democracy, transparent information, and the satisfaction of human and planetary needs.

Resourceism is not merely an economic proposal. It is consciousness translated into material design.

It asks what society would look like if survival were treated as a birthright rather than a market gamble. It asks whether technology could be directed toward shared sufficiency instead of private accumulation. It asks whether democracy could govern economic life rather than stopping at the workplace or factory gate.

It asks the central Civilizational New Thought question:

What kind of world would our highest values build if we allowed them to become institutions?

America’s Dark Night

In Awakening in the Dark Night, I suggested that America’s crisis may reveal the disconnection the nation has refused to confront.

But darkness does not automatically produce awakening.

A crisis can become a mirror, or it can become an excuse for greater cruelty. A frightened society can deepen democracy, or it can surrender to domination. A collapsing order can produce solidarity, or it can produce fascism.

Hope therefore cannot mean confidence that everything will somehow work out.

Hope must mean disciplined participation in what happens next.

It must mean refusing the hypnosis of inevitability. Human beings built these systems. Human beings can rebuild them. Not through wishful thinking, private enlightenment, or one election, but through moral imagination joined to organization, democratic power, courageous truth, and ethical design.

America descended into hell because it repeatedly turned separation into identity, greed into virtue, fear into policy, punishment into justice, exploitation into prosperity, and lies into belonging.

It will emerge only when consciousness becomes large enough to change what consciousness has built.

That requires more than better thoughts.

It requires a new civilization.

“The ballots have not been counted. The grievance has.”

On Thursday night, Donald Trump addressed the nation from the East Room, where the chandeliers glittered, the flags stood at attention, and the Constitution was reportedly told that the event was already at capacity.

The subject was election security. In Trump’s political vocabulary, this means protecting elections from the dangerous possibility that voters may choose incorrectly.

The evening’s biggest revelation was that China had acquired information concerning 220 million American voters. This sounded terrifying until it emerged that voter-roll information can often be legally purchased. Beijing’s diabolical operation may therefore have involved paperwork, data brokers, and somebody remembering the company credit card.

Trump also released heavily redacted intelligence documents. They were so thoroughly blacked out that the remaining text appeared to read:

China.
Election.
Bad things.
Donald was right.

The administration presented the documents as explosive. Unfortunately, the explosions occurred primarily in the imagination. There was no obvious smoking gun, although there was enough smoke to ground flights across the eastern seaboard.

Then came the case from Muskegon, Michigan, where suspicious voter-registration applications containing fake names were identified and stopped by a local clerk. In ordinary reality, this demonstrates that election safeguards functioned. In Trump reality, catching a man before he robs a bank proves that the bank was definitely robbed.

The Department of Homeland Security had also supposedly located more than 270,000 noncitizens on voter rolls in four states. The administration did not explain the methodology, because numbers become very private when asked to provide documentation.

The most disturbing moment arrived near the end, when Trump suggested that his administration would take further action against state election systems. Presidents do not administer elections, but constitutional limits have become increasingly ceremonial, like antique furniture nobody is allowed to sit on.

The groundwork for November is now being carefully prepared. Not for voting, exactly, but for a national magic act in which evidence disappears, facts are covered with black rectangles, and the election is pronounced stolen several months before it occurs.

The ballots have not been counted.

The grievance has.
